TRAFFIC LIGHTS
This afternoon I popped along to a residents’ drop-in session at the Taunton Quaker Meeting House, 13 Bath Place, TA1 4EP, to listen to your concerns and feedback about the upcoming traffic lights and bus service improvement upgrade scheduled for the A38 in Taunton.
The works involve the renewal of equipment at the four existing signal-controlled junctions along the A38 in Taunton, replacing traffic lights that have reached the end of their working life.
Work is due to start on Tuesday 5th May 2026 at the Parkfield Road junction (see map below), followed by the junction at Taunton College (SCAT) in July. In September, works will move to the Musgrove Park/Mountway Road junction, and finally to the Tesco junction with the A38, starting in October 2026.
The new signals will also include specialist bus priority technology, which will speed up access through the lights for bus services along the A38 corridor as part of Somerset’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.
The team will set up traffic management at one site at a time to limit congestion, and specialised Urban64 technology will be used at each junction while the permanent signals are being replaced. This will mirror the existing signal systems until the new equipment is in place.
